The Newly Upgraded Mercure Hotel1/28/2013 - By Ted 
Recently we had the oppportunity to vist the Mercure St Martin & Marina which has the potential to become a top hotel in Saint Martin. Just a few years ago, the hotel underwent a change of management and they began to put in place the plans and investments to upgrade this resort in St Martin. The Mercure St Martin and Marina is nestled on Simpson Bay Lagoon on the northwest coast of the island just 3 miles from Marigot, the French capital with it's amazing dining & shopping. It is conveniently located 4.3 miles from Juliana International Airport - SXM -and 1/2 mile from Baie Rouge, one of the island's most beautiful beaches. This St Martin hotel with its Creole architecture features a soft sandy lagoon beach with an abundance of shady palm trees. Offering 169 refurbished NON-SMOKING rooms, a bar and restaurant, a large, beautiful infinity pool and separate children's pool, full water sport facilities, and a tennis court... you'll find everything you'll need for a fun filled, yet affordable vacation... For ocean swimming, the beach at Nettle Bay is an easy walk across the street. We previously stayed at this resort in St Martin and found clean rooms with good food, an energetic staff, and a great location in Nettle Baie on the Northern Coast of the French side of St Martin. The problem was like so many of the hotels in Saint Martin the rooms were quite dated. This St Martin hotel has now undergone a massive renovation. This first phase included complete gutting and renovation of the interior redo of the exterior of three of the five accommodation buildings. The second phase will be completed next year to complete the final two buildings. In additon to the rooms, the new upgrades include a new spa, gym, waterfront conference facility, and marina on Simpson Bay Lagoon. We were commpletely wowed on our recent site inspection of this St Martin hotel. Mercure is on it way to a becoming a top hotel in Saint Martin with this major renovation. The resort has a completely new look and feel and is now ready for the more demanding American traveler. The refurbrished rooms have a contemporary, light feel and with bright colors and all new furnishings. Check out the new Mercure Hotel web site,to see photo of the new facilities. The Mercure St Martin & Marina is one of the rare hotels in St Martin/St Maarten that offers an affordable "All Inclusive" package. This popular option is favored by families with children, and adults who want to take advantage of an open bar... and not have to drive. We generally do not encourage All Inclusive package in St Martin. With more than 400 restaurants we reommend that guest dine around. But, if you insist on an All Inclusive option, this is the best one on St Martin island. One of the favorite all inclusive options is the "Dinner & Drink" package which includes breakfast and dinner with unlimited drinks at dinner at only $45 PP daily. This leaves the day open to enjoy the island with having to worry about missing lunch at the resort. Standard rooms and duplex are located in the two building that have not been renovated. Deluxe rooms and duplex are located in the renovated buildings and may be either Lagoon Island View. Connecting rooms available. There are also now Jr. Suties with are on the gorund level facing the pool. These suite have been redesigned with the patio enclosed to enlarge the room with a lovely sitting area. None of the rooms have kitchenettes. All room rates include breakfast and the restaurant offers excellent food with lots of menu options whether you choose an All Inclusive package or not.
