Lolo's in St Martin

1/26/2013 - By Ted

One my favorite pastimes is dining out and great restaurants. My busines as Managing Director of St Martin Reservation Center takes me to the island of St Martin for 5 - 7 weeks a year since the early 1980's.

Some call St Martin the Culinary Capital of the Caribbean.  While I have had the pleasure of dining in most of the finest restaurants on the island, one of my favorite experiences is dining at the Lolo's.  These are open air restaurants in Grand Case situated directly on the beach.  The location leaves something to be desired, but the food and the prices can't be beat.

“Lolo” is the St. Martin name for an open air food stand like you might find along roadsides throughout the Caribbean. Some are more established than others, but in general you can expect to sit on picnic tables amidst the smell of grilling meats and seafood produced by freestanding barbecues. There’s also a major perk for those on a budget: most honor a $1 to 1 euro exchange rate! When you factor in that many sell beer for 1 euro, the lolos’ prices are hard to beat.

My passion is the baby back ribs, grilled to perfection on outdoor grills.  Add some peas and rice, corn on the cob, jonny cake, or maybe a Caribbean Lobster and I am in heaven...and dining here hardly puts a dent in my wallet.
